After a long, stressful day delivering packages at Amazon, Tony Evans knew he needed more out of life.
He made a decision that would change everything — pursuing a Master's Degree in Cybersecurity.
But the real lessons came from the struggles he faced after.
Tony graduated with a 3.9 GPA — but no clear path
Despite excelling academically at Kennesaw State University, Tony realized grades alone weren’t enough. He didn’t know how to pick a specific lane in cybersecurity, which certifications to pursue, how to build a strong network, or how to stand out in a crowded job market.
After a full year of rejections, Tony changed his strategy
Frustrated and stuck, he pivoted: shadowing the Information Security department while working customer success at Square. Instead of waiting, he built up his experience: volunteering for projects, learning on the job, and studying for his CompTIA Security+ certification.
Tony broke into cybersecurity as an Instructor — and found his passion.
His first opportunity came through teaching cybersecurity to students. Even while instructing, Tony wrestled with his own career path, exploring cloud roles, analyst positions, and networking — until he finally found his calling in Information Security, specializing in writing policies, building awareness programs, and monitoring insider threats.
